Liberals Want to "Stop the Tea Baggers Here on Long Island"
This Race is a "test for Tea Party Movement"

That's the headline from an email alert sent out by the Long Island Progressive Coalition on behalf of their liberal candidate Lauren Thoden. She has the full support of the Working Families Party, an ACORN affiliate. We fully expect ACORN workers from outside the district to work on Thoden's campaign.

Conservative-Republican Dean Murray - a small businessman and CSA member - is running in a special election on February 9th to fill the NYS Assembly seat vacated by Patricia Eddington.

DEAN MURRAY MUST WIN!
Election this Tuesday Feb 9

If you have doubts about who to support, please read the following email alert sent out by the Long Island Progressive Coalition:

"Dear LIPC Member:

"The loss in Massachusetts shows progressives that who is elected matters and that special elections can send a powerful message that resonate well beyond state or district borders. On the federal level, health care and immigration reform has been slowed down, if not stopped.

'We need to make sure this does not happen in New York State by protecting the Assembly and the Senate from being taken over by people who are against government. What happened in Massachusetts doesn't have to happen on Long Island.

"You can make a difference. In Suffolk County there is a special election for the 3rd Assembly District, which is in Southwest Brookhaven, to replace Democratic Assemblywoman Pat Eddington. The Long Island Progressive Coalition supports Lauren Thoden, and a victory for her will demonstrate that Long Islanders care about health care, education reform, and equal protection for all New Yorkers.

"Lauren's opponent, Dean Murray, is a tea party organizer. If he is elected to a seat held by a Democrat, it will only embolden the tea party right and hurt progressive causes throughout Long Island.

"The election is soon, February 9th, so we have a lot to do in a little time."

Standing Room Only at CSA meeting on January 28
Ten Candidates Seek Support

The Conservative Society for Action held a general membership meeting inside a filled to capacity West Islip American Legion Hall on January 28th.

Among the those in attendance were 10 announced candidates running for seats both in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. They included:

  • NY State Assembly District Candidate Dean Murray, 3rd AD, February 9th Special Election;
  • 1st Congressional District Candidates George Demos, Gary Berntsen, Chris Cox, and Chris Cantwell;
  • 2nd Congressional District Candidates Steven Labate and Anthony Tolda;
  • 4th Congressional District Candidate Dan Maloney;
  • New York State Senate 3rd District Candidates Lee Zeldin and Tom O'Hara.

Each candidate introduced themselves and gave some brief remarks on their qualifications and guiding principles.

While the candidates were a big part of the agenda there were a great many other important items that were discussed. CSA founder Steven Flanagan brought the membership up to speed on events that are significant on both the local and national levels.

In Suffolk County news Flanagan mentioned the huge, upset victory of conservative Steve Mayoka to the Huntington Town Council. Mayoka recorded 18 "no" votes in his first town board meeting and plans to lead the fight to maintain a hiring freeze to keep costs under control.

In the 3rd Assembly District special election, the opposition to Dean Murray is being lead by the Long Island Progressive Coalition and the Working Families Party. Murray announced the launching of a new School Tax Relief Party line.

Recently elected Suffolk legislator Tom Cilmi explained his fight against an additional cell phone tax that has been proposed and the defeat of a $50,000 expenditure for a dog park in Islip.

A tip of the hat was given to CSA members Alex and Rosalie Hanson for personal successes. Alex's election, as a civilian, to Fire Commissioner is historic. Rosalie was chosen Executive of the Year by a Brookhaven town newspaper.

Kudos were also extended to the North Country Patriots. This group has been gathering on 25A in Setauket to show support for our troops every Saturday, from 11:00-12:00 A.M., for over five years.

There was also a call for people to volunteer at the Stony Brook Veterans Hospital. Members have already been making trips to the one in Northport.

In Nassau County, the January 12th Plainview Meeting continues to bare fruit, providing the CSA both new membership and greater influence. To that end, Mr. Flanagan related recent conversations he's had with Nassau County legislators regarding their recent proposed 40% raise. He expressed his extreme displeasure and personally called for the Presiding Offer, asking him to rescind the raises. (Editor's note: the day after this meeting, Presiding office Peter Schmitt called CSA and said he was rescinding the raises).

On the national level there were a number of exciting developments. Judy Pepenella, recently attended meetings with Freedom Works and Tea Party Patriots. She announced that events are being planned locally for April 15th, and in D.C. on August 28th and September 12th.

Outreach from the National Republican Trust PAC also continues to gain traction. Flanagan, Conrad Schabauer and Dee & Gene McGowen met with Scott Wheeler and Fred Peterson of the Trust PAC to discuss plans to cooperate in support of conservative candidates.

It was related that an appealing challenger to Charlie Rangel, Michael Faulkner, has emerged in Harlem and a Conservative Society for Action chapter has been founded in the important swing state of Ohio.

There will also be a Take Back Our Schools Campaign initiated this spring, focused on getting members prepared to run for school boards.

A recurring theme throughout the meeting was how Scott Brown's victory has energized conservative/tea party movements on both the local and national levels throughout the country.

The next CSA General membership meeting will be held on February 8th in the Plainview Public Library at 7:00 P.M. Candidate screening nights are planned for February 11th and 18th at the American Legion in West Islip.

"Change" Being Proposed in Riverhead
$122 Million Spending Plan Up for Vote on Tuesday

The Riverhead school district wants voters to approve a $122 million bond proposal. The money will be used to "improve" and maintain the district's buildings and for other projects.

The "marketing plan" for the district uses photos showing buildings from other school districts and asks voters if their buildings look as nice. It is also pointed out that roofs on many buildings "need work" and suggests that maintenance was not as robust as necessary over the years. OK.

But do we need to spend $122,000,000?

This is TOO much. The district should scale back this massive expenditure and take care of "maintenance" before it starts a major building project that will surely impact residents' tax bills in a year when property taxes are already going to see massive increases.

The district surely needs some capital improvement, but this is not the time to do 20 years of work in one huge project. Let's fix what we have. Then we can discuss expansion on a case-by-case basis.

Note that the answer to pay for all this is to take a "mortgage". Yes, let future generations pay. That's what a bond issue is, buy now and pay later.

This is not "Change We Can Believe In"

This is massive spending on an unprecedented scale by a school district that dropped the ball in maintaining its buildings in recent years. Now they want YOU to pick up the tab.

Vote NO on Tuesday.
